Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting

A Sociology, Travel, Self Help book. The French magazine Parents says that if a baby is scared of strangers, his mother should...

The secret behind France's astonishingly well-behaved children. When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn't aspire to become a "French parent." French parenting isn't a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren't doing anything special. Yet, the French children Druckerman knows sleep through the night at two or three months old while those of her American friends take a year or more. French kids eat well-rounded meals that are more likely to include braised leeks than chicken nuggets. And while her American friends spend their visits resolving spats between their kids, her French friends sip coffee while the kids play. Motherhood itself is a whole different experience in France. There's no role model, as there is...

More About Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting

[French] Parents see it as their job to bring the child around to appreciating this [food]. They believe that just as they must teach a child how to sleep, how to wait, and how to say bonjour, they must teach her how to eat. Pamela Druckerman, Bringing Up Bb: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting Frenchwomen dont see pregnancy as a free pass to overeat, in part because they havent been denying themselves the foods they loveor secretly binging on those foodsfor most of their adult lives. Too often, American women eat on the sly, and the result is much more guilt than pleasure, Mireille Guiliano explains in her intelligent book French Women Dont Get Fat. Pretending such pleasures dont exist, or trying to eliminate them from your diet for an extended time, will probably lead to weight gain. Pamela Druckerman, Bringing Up Bb: One American Mother... gteau au yaourt (Yogurt Cake) 2 six-ounce containers plain whole-milk (not reduced-fat) yogurt. The popularity of books like this give the impression that today's American parents are willing to take advice from anyone other than their own relatives. The most helpful advice the French have about child rearing is very traditional, the sorts of things people everywhere have said for generations: don't pick the baby up the moment... Infuriating. But once I got past the crazy, indulgent American parent v. calm, wise, strict French parent nonsense, I could enjoy this author's engaging, witty writing. Obviously I disagree with the premise that the French are better parents. Sorry, a 2-month-old sleeping through the night is not uniquely French. Neither is an obedient,... Also known as "French children don't throw food". One of the best parenting books I've ever read, and entertaining as well! I actually took notes and have been trying some things out. I love the author's attitude and I can see a lot of logic in many of the French ideas. But regardless, I really enjoyed reading the story of this family!...
