This novel was read in French, the English translation being Ninety-Three.Victor Hugo published this, his last novel, in 1874, the events of the story having occurred during the French Revolution and its War in the Vendee in 1793 at the height of the Terror... Good fiction about the French revolution. Enjoyed the plot, but still struggle with Hugo's style. This is the best translation (according to an academic friend who has researched it) and this is an incredible book. I am only on the 4th chapter and already I have had at least 5 instances where I have been struck by how perfectly worded a sentence is, or a description is, and I have to stop and read it again.
